8th of March Project – 2026 Edition
Exploring Heritage, Identity, and the Legacy of En
On March 8, 1744, an explosion at the Antigua Naval Dockyard killed eight enslaved Africans working on the expansion of the British naval facility. Their names Billy, London, James Soe, Caramantee Quamano, Scipio, Joe, Dick, and Johnno were later recovered from historical records, restoring identities long missing from Dockyard history.
Led by the National Parks Authority, the 8th of March Project explores the history and legacy of enslavement through research and community engagement. In 2026, under the theme “Knowledge of Self is Generational Wealth,” the focus will be on youth engagement and heritage education.
